Activity in Nature-Wikiloc

According to our project, we have to prepare a map of green areas. Students have to put their neighbourhood on the map and fill it with relevant information about nature. In order to fulfil this goal, we have prepared the following activity: a hiking route to track it on the GPS thanks to the app called WikiLoc.

We have chosen the stretch by the river Xallas between the bridge of Randufe and A Xesteira. Downloading the free app called WikiLoc, we are allowed to track the route on the GPS. When we take a picture, we create a waypoint (signalled by a yellow flag on the map), which allows us to edit information.

Five students, monitored by the Biology teacher Aurora Puentes, were in charge of delivering information: Paula Antelo, Nerea Ferreiro, Noemí Jallas, Alba Pichel and Uxía Tasende. The group of 43 students and teachers from our 5 partner countries enjoyed the trekking journey for a couple of hours surrounded by nature, and learnt about the common vegetation by the river in Santa Comba:

  • Native species such as oak trees, chestnut trees, pine trees, ash tree, alder and birches.
  • Meadows.
  • Riparian vegetation.
    Large woody debris.
  • Common plants in Galician woodlands, like ferns.
  • Hammocks and aquatic plants.
  • Invasive species like eucalyptus.
  • Negative impacts on nature, such as mines, quarries and hydroelectric power stations.
  • Climate change: unusual temperatures in February, too hot for this time of the year

After hiking, we had to use the ICT room for learning how to edit the route. Our ultimate goals are two:
Help the Council of Santa Comba* to promote the area at an international level.
Show our partners how to use the same or a similar app in their home countries, so that they can teach students about nature in their areas.

* The Council has helped us providing us with security staff and with the collaboration of the youth technician José Manuel Vázquez.
